unlike regular timer that goes on and off at fixed time of a day, this thing uses light sensor to turn things on at dusk for a set period of time.
when I go on long vacation, I plug this thing into an extension cord and place it by the window, close the curtain and plug my desk lamp to this thing. So when it goes dark, my desk lamp will turn on.
Because it uses light sensor, the turn on time will automatically adjust to the condition of the day. For example, if it is cloudy or raining, it will turn on earlier than on a sunny day. Also because sun goes down a little earlier everyday as it approaches winter. So it makes the house more 'live in' like than a regular, fixed on/off type timer.
